Analogue Appeal Posts

One instance that I can appreciate an analog approach would be when I work in a hospital. One of my job requirements would be obtaining the patient’s vitals and documenting the results for the doctors, nurses, and other specialists who need to review them before attempting any procedure. Most of the technology we use is digital, including the usual go-round of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and oxygen measurement. However, there is another vital sign that has to be obtained which is respiration. To get this you would need to count the patient’s breaths within a minute to ensure adequate breathing. In every room, there is usually a clock on the wall, whether it be for the patient to keep up with the time or for the staff to use when collecting vitals. It’s mostly your standard analog clock with hands that move to the second, minute, and hour.

Long hospital corridor, with side doors and a wall clock. At the bottom of a door marks the entrance to another area.

These analog clocks appeal to me because looking up at the wall would take far less time than having to awaken a digital watch that more and more people seem to wear in fast-paced environments. There is no additional hand to indicate the second when you have reached the end of the minute on most digital clocks and watches. As I am working, I often wear my apple watch in its analog mode, where the moving arms can be seen. Occasionally, I will forget to charge my watch the night before or leave it on the charger at home only to discover it when I get to work. For this reason, I prefer analog clocks hanging on walls since they are generally reliable.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say “Give up technology!” entirely, but rather there should be periods of taking a break from it. Nowadays, technology has an impact on almost every aspect of your life, whether it be small or big. People who overuse technology can become addicted to it which can lead to other problems, causing either physical or mental problems down the road. , Going through social media and viewing beauty standards that weren’t relevant to you before, but seeing it time and time again begins to change your mindset. Bad habits can be formed by viewing the contents, which can eventually lead to a decrease in self-esteem, as well as feelings of anxiety, loneliness, depression, and body image issues.

Social media and technology may seem like such a hassle after reading these examples, but being inconvenienced by one thing does not mean you have to give up on them entirely. If you don’t want to give up everything, take breaks from technologies to refresh yourself and to develop a mental fortitude that will prevent your state of mind from being influenced by pictures or videos. In most cases, I am dependent on technology; however, I would not go so far as saying I am addicted since I could easily go two days without checking social media or watching the latest episode of this or that. Because technology is so integral to everyday life, I have no intention of giving it up for a while, but I will say giving myself a break now and again has relieved most tensions and lessened the possibility of physical and mental complications.
